The John Deere A is a 2WD row-crop tractor from the Two-Cylinder Letter Series series. This second generation was manufactured by John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, USA from 1939 to 1947.
The JD A is equipped with one of two engines: a 5.1 L (309.0 cu·in) two-cylinder all-fuel engine or a 5.3 L (321.0 cu·in) two-cylinder all-fuel/gasoline engine and one of two transmissions: unsynchronized gear transmission with 4 forward and 1 reverse gear or unsynchronized gear transmission with 6 forward and 1 reverse gear.
The tractor could be equipped with the following engines:
- John Deere. It is a 5.1 L, 5,064 cm2, (309.0 cu·in) two-cylinder natural aspirated all-fuel engine with 140.0 mm (5.51 in) of the cylinder bore and 165.0 mm (6.5 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 4.45:1. This engine produced 18.2 PS (13.4 kW; 18.0 HP) at 975 rpm of output power.
- John Deere. It is a 5.3 L, 5,260 cm2, (321.0 cu·in) two-cylinder natural aspirated all-fuel/gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 140.0 mm (5.51 in) and the piston stroke is 171.0 mm (6.73 in). The compression ratio rating is 4.45:1 for all-fuel version or 5.60:1 for gasoline version. This engine produced 34.5 PS (25.4 kW; 34.0 HP) at 975 rpm of output power.
The John Deere Model A is equipped with manual steering, differential mechanical expanding shoe brakes, an open operator station, and 53.0 liters (14 US gal.; 11.7 Imp. gal) fuel tank for an all-fuel version or 68.1 liters (18 US gal, 15 Imp. gal) for gasoline engine version.
John Deere A variants:
- AR – A-Regular with standard front axle
- AO – Orchard
- AW – Adjustable wide-front
- AN – Single front wheel
