The John Deere LX172 is a lawn and garden tractor from the John Deere LX100-series. The John Deere LX172 garden tractor was produced at the John Deere Horicon Works plant (Horicon, Wisconsin, USA) from 1990 to 1997.
The John Deere LX172 tractor used an air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke Kawasaki FC420V gasoline engine with vertical PTO shaft. The FC420V engine has an OHV (overhead valve) design; cast-iron cylinder liner; reciprocating balancer; float type carburetor with fixed main jet; flywheel magneto transistor type ignition system; mechanical governor. An 89.0 mm (3.5 in) cylinder bore and 68.0 mm (2.68 in) piston stroke give the motor a total of 423 cc of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 8.4:1. The Kawasaki FC420V motor produced 14.0 HP (10.4 kW) at 3,600 rpm of horsepower and 30.6 Nm (3.12 kg·m; 22.58 ft·lb) at 2,400 rpm of torque.
The John Deere LX172 is equipped with Peerless 801 gear type transmission with five forward and one rear gear, disc brakes, and manual sector-and-pinion steering. This tractor used open operator station, independent PTO-shaft with electric clutch and 9.5 L (2.5 US gal) fuel tank.

I have a LX172 lawn mower and the transmition is acting up.(it misses a cog every now and then in the lower speeds and it’s hard to get into reverse.) what do you think is the problem? I’d appreciate your thoughts.
