The John Deere 870 is a 2WD or 4WD compact utility tractor from the 70 Compact series. This tractor was manufactured by the Yanmar for John Deere from 1989 to 1998. The JD 870 is equipped with 1.4 L three-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: collar shift transmission with two-stage dry disc clutch (9 forward and 2 reverse gears) or syncromesh transmission with two-stage dry disc clutch (9 forward and 2 reverse gears).
The JD 870 compact utility tractor used the Yanmar 3TN84 engine. It is a 1.4 L, 1,362 cm2, (83.1 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 84.0 mm (3.31 in) of the cylinder bore and 86.0 mm (3.39 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 28.4 PS (20.9 kW; 28.0 HP) of maximum output power.
The John Deere 870 is equipped with manual or hydrostatic power (optional) steering, differential wet disc brakes, open operator station with two-post ROPS and 32.0 liters (8.5 US gal.; 7 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
