The John Deere 2640 is a 2WD utility tractor from the 2040 series. This tractor was manufactured by John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa, USA from 1976 to 1982 (the first generation: 1976-1979, the second generation: 1980-1982). The second generation of the JD 2640 is equipped with a 4.5 L (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: a collar shift transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, a two-speed power shift transmission with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears or a power shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears.
The John Deere 2640 utility tractor used the John Deere engine. It is a 4.5 L, 4,523 cm2, (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.7:1. This engine produced 71 PS (52.2 kW; 70 HP) at 2,500 rpm of PTO output power.
The John Deere 2640 is equipped with mechanical steering with power assist, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes, open operator station, and 73.8 liters (19.5 US gal.; 16.2 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
