The J.I. Case 970 is a 2WD row-crop tractor from the 70 series.
This tractor was manufactured by J.I. Case in Racine, Wisconsin, USA from 1970 to 1978. This first generation was manufactured from 1970 to 1973.
The J.I. Case 970 is equipped with one of two engines: a 6.6 L (401.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine or a 6.2 L (377.0 cu·in) six-cylinder gasoline engine and one of two transmissions: a unsynchronized gear transmission with 8 forward and 2 reverse gears and dry disc clutch or a partial power shift transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears and hydraulic wet disc clutch.
The tractor could be equipped with the following engines:
- J.I. Case. It is a 6.6 L, 6,571 cm2, (401.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 105.0 mm (4.13 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.5:1. This engine produced 87.2 PS (64.1 kW; 86.0 HP) at 1,900 rpm of output power.
- J.I. Case. It is a 6.2 L, 6,178 cm2, (377.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 102.0 mm (4.02 in) and the piston stroke is 127.0 mm (5 in). The compression ratio rating is 7.5:1.
The J.I. Case 970 is equipped with power steering, differential hydraulic dry disc brakes, an open operator station and 189.3 liters (50 US gal.; 41.6 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
