The John Deere 4030 is equipped with one of two engines: a 5.4 L (329.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine or a 5.0 L (303.0 cu·in) six-cylinder gasoline engine (this gasoline engine was available only during the 1973 model year) and one of two transmissions: a partially synchronized transmission with 8 forward and 2 reverse gears or a partial power shift transmission with 16 forward and 6 reverse gears.
The tractor could be equipped with the following engines:
- John Deere diesel engine. It is a 5.4 L, 5,390 cm2, (329.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 102.0 mm (4.02 in) of the cylinder bore and 110.0 mm (4.33 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.2:1.
- John Deere gasoline engine. It is a 5.0 L, 4,965 cm2, (303.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 98.0 mm (3.86 in) and the piston stroke is 110.0 mm (4.33 in).
The JD 4030 is equipped with power steering; differential hydraulic wet disc brakes; open operator station, four-post Roll-Gard ROPS or Sound-Gard cab, and 132.5 liters (35 US gal.; 29.1 Imp. gal) fuel tank. The Deere 4030 could be equipped with the John Deere 148 loader.
