The JD 455 is equipped with a 0.9 L three-cylinder diesel engine and shaft-driven hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The John Deere 455 lawn tractor used the Yanmar 3TNA72UJ3 engine. It is a 0.9 L, 881 cm2, (53.8 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 72.0 mm (2.83 in) of the cylinder bore and 72.0 mm (2.83 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 21.6:1. This engine produced 22.3 PS (16.4 kW; 22.0 HP) at 3,350 rpm of maximum output power.

The John Deere 455 is equipped with hydrostatic power steering (four-wheel steering was available as an option), wet disc brakes, open operator station and 24.6 liters (6.5 US gal.; 5.4 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
